Salman Khan celebrates his 57th birthday today. The superstar is not just known for his superb screen presence and enviable box office record, but also for his ‘Being Human’ endeavour. Suniel Shetty, while speaking exclusively to Bollywood Hungama last month during the promotions of Dharavi Bank, talked highly of this side of Salman and also his parents for doing so much for the society.
Two years back, in an exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama, Suniel Shetty opened up about how he rescued 128 trafficked girls and sent them back to Nepal in 1996. Salman Khan meanwhile has hinted that he got the Being Human idea from him since he gave him boots and shirts for free from his store, Mischief during their struggling days. In turn, Salman used to sit outside his store to publicize his business.
When Suniel Shetty was asked whether he agrees that somewhere, his kind-hearted attitude and goodwill also played a big part in getting love from all quarters, he replied, “No, I don’t. Because I am a celebrity, all these things look nice. That’s what a normal human being is supposed to do. If I travel in an auto rickshaw, people would say, ‘Kya simple aadmi hai yaar. Auto mein jaata hai’! Me becoming an actor doesn’t mean I am superhuman! Salman Khan is a good human being and that’s why he talks that way. What did I do for him? I did nothing. Salman Khan donated his bone marrow many years ago to someone. Now that’s a man who wants a change in society and that’s why God is kind to him. God is taking care of him. He’s God’s favourite child!”
Suniel Shetty continued, “Similarly, tomorrow, someone might spread the news that ‘Suniel Shetty helps an old lady cross the road’. Big deal, man! Everybody does it. But because they are not Suniel Shetty, they are not spoken about. We have these privileges. That’s why I always tell my children – we are blessed. Do good and it’ll only be multiplied ten times. I have done simple things but since I am a celebrity, it’s coming back to me 100 times.”
Suniel Shetty then opined, “However, I’d also like to add that I didn’t do anything extraordinary. My father did ten times more. He kept giving money to people who asked for it. My mother and my grandparents would feed anybody who’d come to their house. I would ask them ‘Who were they’. They’d reply, ‘I don’t know. Those people were hungry, na’. This is doing good. Sikhs organized langar. No wonder, they are a respected race. In fact, the whole of India is respected as we believe in ‘Athithi devo bhava’. It is in our DNA!”
