Asha Bhosle will turn 90 on September 8 this year and yet, she’s raring to go. During her birthday, she’s all set to perform live at a concert in Dubai, UAE. The legendary singer spoke about it recently with Rajdeep Sardesai of India Today. She also went down memory lane and shared fascinating trivia.

Asha Bhosle speaks about Lata Mangeshkar: “Agar ‘Piya Tu Ab Toh Aa Ja’ didi ko dete, toh nahin hota. She would have never sung such a song”

Rajdeep Sardesai remarked that she has sung not just soulful but also dance numbers and many other kinds of tracks. When asked which type of songs she enjoyed singing the most, Asha Bhosle answered, “I liked all types of songs. I also sang qawaalis like ‘Yeh Ishq Ishq Hai’ (Barsaat Ki Raat; 1960). Then also songs like ‘Nigahein Milane Ko Jee Chahta Hai’ (Dil Hi To Hai; 1947).” Asha Bhosle even sang some of these songs. She continued that she sang ghazals and also folk songs like 'Paan Khaye Saiyan Hamarao' from Teesri Kasam (1963).

Asha Bhosle then said why she was apt to sing certain songs over her legendary singer-sister, Lata Mangeshkar, “Jaise situation ke gaane aate hai, waise gaane gaate hai. But the music director should realize who should sing the song. Agar ‘Piya Tu Ab Toh Aa Ja’ (Caravan; 1971) didi ko dete, toh nahin hota. She would have never sung such a song. You need to believe in the song and immerse yourself completely. Only then the desired result can be achieved.”

Asha ji continued, “If the song is a ghazal, toh usse ghazal ke jaise hi gaana chahiye. It shouldn’t seem like a film song. The same applies to qawwali. Apne aap ko uss character mein aap daal dijiye. I would become Rekha, Madhubala and Helen when I sang for them.”

At another point in this interview, she also said that she misses Lata Mangeshkar, who passed away on February 6, 2022. She was my elder sister and also my mother. My mother had told me, ‘Agar main nahin rahungi toh yeh tumhari maa hai’.”
