The recent stabbing of the 16 year-old Junaid who was travelling by train in Haryana, which eventually led to his death created a national uproar. The fatal attack which escalated from a minor dispute soon escalated into a communal face-off. Now, coming out support of the late Junaid’s family, documentary filmmaker Saba Dewan took to social media and started off an online campaign termed ‘Not In My Name’, to show the people’s outrage at such merciless lynching. People across 12 cities came out on to the streets and protested against the sudden spate of mob lynching incidents that have been on the rise currently.
Bollywood celebs take to streets to show support for filmmaker Saba Dewan’s ‘Not In My Name’ campaignIn Mumbai too, braving the heavy downpour, many Mumbaikars held placards like ‘Break The Silence’, ‘No Place For Islamophobia’ and ‘Shed Hate, Not blood’ came out on the streets protesting against the lynching while supporting the ‘Not In My Name’ campaign. Bollywood celebrities too like Shabana Azmi, Girish Karnad, Kalki Koechlin, Ranvir Shorey, Konkona Sen Sharma and others joined the campaign showing their strong support for the same.
Speaking about the issue, the ever-so-vocal Shabana Azmi spoke about the power of social media in today’s world and also insisted that the government should enact and enforce a strict law against the culprits of such lynching. Besides Mumbai, similar protests were also held in places like Thiruvananthapuram, Chandigarh, Jaipur, Hyderabad, Patna, Allahabad, Kochi, Lucknow, Kolkata and Bengaluru.
