16 Years Of Fanaa EXCLUSIVE: “The footfalls of Fanaa would be more than the footfalls of Rs. 300 crore grossers of today. In fact, the footfalls of the 300 crore grossers of today would not be even 50% of Fanaa’s footfalls” – Kunal Kohli

Aamir Khan had taken a four-year break after Dil Chahta Hai (2001). He returned in 2005 with Mangal Pandey – The Rising. Sadly, despite the hype, it collected just Rs. 27.86 crore. He bounced back five months later with Rang De Basanti (2006). The film, considered a cult classic today, collected a huge Rs. 53.08 crore. Four months later, Aamir Khan was back with Fanaa, co-starring Kajol. It was far more commercial than Rang De Basanti and had generated unbelievable hype. Yet, it collected Rs. 51.87 crore. However, the film didn’t release in the state of Gujarat. Had it been released there, Fanaa had chances of crossing the Rs. 60 crore mark.

Bollywood Hungama exclusively spoke about this aspect with Fanaa’s director Kunal Kohli on the film’s 16th anniversary. To which, Kunal Kohli reasoned that he put up such numbers at a time when the ticket prices were not as astronomical as in today’s times.

 

Kunal Kohli said, “In those days, crossing the Rs. 50-crore mark was like crossing the Rs. 200-crore mark in today’s times. If you see the footfalls of Fanaa, it’ll be more than the footfalls of Rs. 300 crore grossers of today. In fact, the footfalls of the 300 crore grossers of today would not be even 50% of Fanaa’s footfalls. The ticket prices were 1/3rd or 1/4th of the present-day prices. The most expensive ticket cost Rs. 150 then. Abhi toh Rs. 1200 se ticket prices start hote hai. Toh yeh kya 300 crore maar rahe hai?”

 

Kunal Kohli continued, “Footfalls are coming down. It’s a wrong trend. Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2’s makers have done a good thing by keeping the ticket prices reasonable. Yet, the film will touch Rs. 175 crore or even might cross the Rs. 200 crore mark. I have been saying for the longest time that we can’t have high ticket prices. But I guess had they not increased the prices, films which did Rs. 300 crore business would have got finished at Rs. 70 crores or Rs. 80 crores.”

 

Kunal Kohli further said, “Ticket prices are so expensive that you can’t even take a girl out on a date to the cinemas. A guy must be thinking that if he buys jeans and a top for his girlfriend and then takes her out for dinner, it’ll be cheaper than going to a movie in the first weekend!”
