25 Years of Kuch Kuch Hota Hai: Manish Malhotra shares behind-the-scenes stories including Kajol’s “heavy” wig, engagement look, Rani Mukerji's mom's mangalsutra

As Karan Johar's Kuch Kuch Hota Hai celebrates its 25th anniversary this year, fashion designer Manish Malhotra, who worked on the film's costumes, shared several anecdotes from his design diaries. In a post on Instagram, Malhotra revealed how Rani Mukerji's mother's mangalsutra came to rescue for a particular scene in the film.

"On our last schedule, Karan was busy with the edit so I left before him for Scotland to shop there. Once he came, he saw the costumes and loved them. I was keen to keep Rani Indian and he agreed," Malhotra wrote.

 

"For the title song in Scotland, Karan asked me for a mangalsutra. I ran back to the costume room wondering where I would find one. Rani's mother was passing by and I requested her to give me her mangalsutra. I ran back to Karan and said, 'Here it is!' Strangely, it was matching Rani's saree," he added.

 

Malhotra also spoke about how he came up with the iconic looks for the three lead actors: Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, and Rani Mukerji. "We all as a team were so excited to begin work on the film. Karan wanted a young, vibrant, and sporty look for the film. We went shopping to London for all three actors," he wrote.

 

"For Kajol, I came out with the idea that we would keep the front of the sports apparels but the backs would be constructed with zips to give her the best fit. On the first day of the film, her wig was heavy, and it's only by the third day that it settled in," he added.

 

Malhotra also revealed that Rani Mukerji's look was a challenge, as she was very new to the industry. "Rani's entire look was a challenge. She was very new and we had to work on the glam look. All the three actors gave the film a lot of love and Karan, from his first film, would keep the atmosphere light and fun," he wrote.

 

 

 

Kuch Kuch Hota Hai remains one of the most iconic films. It is known for its memorable dialogues, catchy songs, and stylish costumes.
