Anurag Kashyap credits Shah Rukh Khan's Pathaan as the ultimate turning point in 2023: “Bollywood’s curse is lifted”

The Hindi film industry has had a great year at the box office in 2023 following a couple of years lull with an array of flops. With Shah Rukh Khan starrer Pathaan, the film went on to rake in over Rs. 1000 crore at the box office and revived the industry. Following that, Jawan also earned over Rs. 1000 crore and completely obliterated the box office. Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap considers SRK’s Pathaan as the turning point of Bollywood in 2023.

In an interaction with Pinkvilla, Kashyap said, “I think it has been great. Bollywood’s curse is lifted which is very good news because distributors are happy, studios are happy, everybody is happy. When they are happy, I know my projects will get greenlit.”

 

He added, “The biggest moment of the year was Pathaan breaking the curse. There was a curse on Bollywood and Shah Rukh Khan came and said, ‘Hatao isko (just remove it).’ That was the defining moment (of the year).”

 

Pathaan also stars Deepika Padukone, John Abraham, Dimple Kapadia and Ashutosh Rana. The film had a cameo of Salman Khan who reprised his role as Tiger.

 

Meanwhile, Anurag Kashyap directed Kennedy this year. Starring Rahul Bhat and Sunny Leone, the neo-noir thriller premiered at the Cannes Film Festival 2023.
