Big Cine Expo: Jackky Bhagnani says, "Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein's share in re-release is more than that of Ganapath"; Tumbbad is the fourth most-watch film in Miraj Cinemas this financial year

An interesting panel discussion took place at the 7th Big Cine Expo 2024, Mumbai. Called the 'Bridging The Content Supply Chain And Leveraging Alternate Content', it was graced by Jackky Bhagnani, Amit Kumar Sharma – Managing Director, Miraj Entertainment, Raghav Anand – Partner & Leader Media - Digital & Convergence (Africa, India & Middle East), Ernst & Young, Rahul Puri – Managing Director, Mukta A2 Cinemas, Rajesh Mishra – Executive Director & Group CEO, UFO Moviez and Thomas D'souza – Sr. Vice President - Programming, PVR INOX.

The topic was about alternate content, that is releasing anime films, sporting and even political events along with older titles, in cinemas. The panellists tried to analyse why these events and old films are working on the big screen.

 

Jackky Bhagnani, whose production house Pooja Entertainment, recently re-released Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein (2001) in cinemas successfully, raised laughs as he said, “I clearly know what not to do (when it comes to choosing scripts). RHTDM's share in re-release is more than the share of Ganapath (2023).”

 

He continued, “The connect with the masses is the need of the hour, be it alternate or primary. The audience is consuming content very differently than what we are thinking in our offices. An A plus B is not equal to C. If something is good, audiences are going for it even if it stars an unknown face. And if the content doesn't resonate with them at an emotional level or if it's not new for them, then it might star the biggest faces and be backed by the biggest production house and yet they won't be interested. That's the biggest learning that I have got.”

 

Amit Kumar Sharma noted, “A good film with good music has worked for re-released films. Also, certain films became very big on smaller screens and were missed out by people on the big screen. People are coming in large numbers to see these films. For instance, Rockstar (2011) has fantastic music, but it didn't get its due. Similarly, Tumbbad (2018) grew on smaller screens.”

 

 

He noted, “You'll be amazed to know that it is the fourth-highest film in terms of admission in Miraj this financial year. Only three films did better than Tumbbad this year! And when you believe in content, you also whole-heartedly market that content.”

 

He also said, “We re-released Gangs Of Wasseypur and it also got an extraordinary response.”

 

Meanwhile, at the Big Cine Expo, this writer was given a demo by Yusuf S Galabhaiwala, the third-generation entrepreneur who runs Galalite Screens. Yusuf explained to us about the Mirage XDL 1.2, a first-of-its-kind silver screen that is much more advanced and audience-friendly. This means that the viewing angle doesn't matter; the viewer can sit at any seat and get the best visual experience, unlike in certain theatres, where the edges are darker than the centre of the screen. The manner in which he showed us both the ordinary screen and the Mirage XDL 1.2 screen so that we understand the subtle difference, made for a great impact.

 

Yusuf S Galabhaiwala was a part of the inaugural ceremony, along with Stree 2 producer Dinesh Vijan, and was also a part of a panel called 'Decoding the Perfect Cinema Cocktail: How Cinema Technology Shapes Box Office & Content', in which he was joined by the legendary Suresh Babu Daggubati, among others.
