EXCLUSIVE: Huma Qureshi speaks about the impact of her debut film Gangs of Wasseypur on her career: ‘My fear was that I don't want to be that girl who’s just a one film wonder’

Bollywood actress Huma Qureshi, who shot to fame after cult hit debut film Gangs of Wasseypur, recently completed her 10 years in Bollywood industry. The actress sat with Bollywood Hungama for an exclusive interview and spoke about how crucial of an impact her debut film had on her now-glowing career.

“I think when I came to Bombay, I wanted to do one film, because I didn't know how it was going to happen,” Huma shared. “For a middle-class Delhi girl, just coming to Bombay and staying away from your family was a very big deal. So, I was like ‘I just want to do one film, I wanted one really good film.’ And I was lucky that my first film Ganga of Wasseypur became the sort of cult hit which was really celebrated in the West, it was celebrated in India.”

 

“Then suddenly people knew who I was and I signed four or five films before Gangs of Wasseypur was even released,” she continued. “But then I was lost 'cause I was like ‘Now what do I do? What now? And what do I do?’ Because I think it wasn't me, I think the film really worked. For me, for the longest time my fear was ‘I don't want to be that girl who’s just a one film wonder, and the only thing I’ll be remembered for is “permission lena chahiye.” So that was a big fear because I did a lot of great work but people would always talk about Gangs of Wasseypur, people will always talk about the “permission scene.”

 

Sharing how she’s grown in the industry over these years and how it’s been a matter of “self-discovery,” Huma added, “So, I was like ‘No I have to do something more.’ So, I think the past few years have been really like interesting for me because it's been about self-discovery and learning to say no and learning to be like okay this is what I want to do and this is who I am and I think being surer of myself as an actor and that's been a lot of fun. That's been very empowering and I think it also reflects in my work now.”

 

On the work front, Huma Qureshi recently saw the premiere of the sequel of her acclaimed political drama Maharani which debuted on August 25. The drama series is created by Subhash Kapoor and also stars Sohum Shah and Vineet Kumar in pivotal roles. She also has Double XL, Monica O My Darling, Tarla, and Pooja Meri Jaan next in her pipeline.
