Jackson Wang tells a tale of passion and intimate love in mixtape 'Lost & Found' - Album Review

Global superstar Jackson Wang, who is an established musician from China and rapper in South Korean group GOT7, has dropped an English mixtape Lost & Found. The surprise release dropped on March 7, 2022, with one day’s notice in true Jackson Wang style. The album was released without any promotions or teasers and “consists of some old songs” recorded by Wang.

Team Wang has promised the fans that they are working on something big. This mixtape features songs of varying genres including R&B, hip hop, rap, etc. The songs speak about love, life, and different emotions that are lost and found along the course of each moment. The album art is simple, and yet showcases a deeper meaning for these songs were kept under wraps and unreleased for a long time. Now that they are out in the world, these songs are out to capture the listeners’ attention all over the globe.

 

POISON

 

‘Poison’ is a synth-based R&B track. Jackson immerses himself into the music as he sings – “I keep drinking your poison/ And I don’t know why”. This heartbreak ballad sports a hazy & dizzy vibe to it.

 

DEAD

 

‘Dead’ is a funky retro beat track. It speaks about being caught up and lost in a materialistic world – “Cuz you’re not dead to the world / You’re caught up in yourself.” Jackson’s voice flows in and out matching with the musical tempo. The synthesizer casts a hauntingly beautiful glow over the song.

 

I DON’T HAVE IT

 

‘I Don’t Have It’ is a song about having lost a certain thing or an emotion. The lyrics are quite bare and edgy “Ain’t nobody worth all problems/Ain’t shit between us you can’t stay till the morning/You can’t get a dollar from me stop pocket watching”. The refrain ‘I’m bleeding’ accompanied with Wang’s falsetto and orchestral music is just a segue that was needed to end this stunning track – like a climax of a musical.

 

POWER

 

Accidentally spoiled during a live stream in 2020, ‘Power’ opens with jazzy pop beats. The new swing influence clubbed with EDM music is a musical treat for the ears. The bridge is the most powerful part of the song and Jackson makes a smooth delivery with lyrics – “I’m drowning / Let the waves bring me back home tonight / I know how things left off / I’ll call till you say goodbye.” The song is no short of a power anthem.

 

BLACKOUT

 

‘Blackout’ boasts retro-inspired bass music. The song boasts of sexual undertones with lyrics like –“nothing else matters whеn / I’m deep within/ The only thing we changin’ is positions / So we go up and black out.” The song sports semi-trap beats in the chorus which only adds to the funkiness of the song.

 

IN MY BED

 

If ‘Blackout’ sported only undertones, then ‘In My Bed’ goes a-roaring about the physical intimacy. The bass-EDM-trap beats present a beautiful juxtaposition of music that is just right for a song like In My Bed. Jackson sings at a slightly high register, expressing the heightened desire written in the lyrics “I want you to live in my my bed / You already live in my my head/Live inside my heart instead”

 

THE MOMENT

 

The Moment details the intimacy and the passion between two lovers with lyrics like “Passion make it burn like that (uh huh) / Waves send shocks all through my body / Thousand little heart attacks (ah ha ha)”. The alt-indie music suits the mood of the song which is high on the feelings of those special moments spent.

 

VIBES

 

‘Vibes’ is a sweet love song. The chill country music matches the mellow mood of the song. Jackson Wang chooses lyrics like – “Say the word that you hate me / Just so I could know it’s over when it’s done” – to make a simple yet meaningful confession. There’s a certain charm to the song due to the simplicity that draws the listeners in.

 

Each song is different and yet sports a strain of familiarity that is Jackson Wang’s husky vocals. These songs are something that Wang treasured and recorded with passion. With the release of the mixtape Lost & Found, Jackson Wang and his team have made a promise of releasing something even bigger, very soon. The mixtape’s title is quite apt for it symbolizes the songs that were lost before and are now found upon their sudden unveiling in the world. Jackson Wang draws on love, heartbreak, and passion as he sings each song with a flawless edge. His husky vocals take the emotions a few notches higher.
