Javed Akhtar’s Regret Over Declining Kuch Kuch Hota Hai

During the discussion, Akhtar expressed regret over turning down what would become one of the most beloved Bollywood films. "I had written the first song for it," he said. However, his decision to walk away came when he learned of the film's title. “When Karan decided on the title, I refused to work on a film with that name. I thought, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai... kya hota hai? I regret it now, but at that time, I refused,” he explained.

A Creative Decision Rooted in Principle

Akhtar’s choice to step back from the project wasn’t merely a reaction to the title. He noted that the ’80s, in his view, marked a period where Hindi cinema often produced songs lacking meaningful or tasteful lyrics. “People were either writing double-meaning songs or songs with no meaning at all,” he said. For this reason, he avoided films that he felt compromised the integrity of song lyrics, and Kuch Kuch Hota Hai fell into that category for him at the time.

Kuch Kuch Hota Hai: A Box-Office Triumph

Despite Akhtar's reservations, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai became a massive success after its release. Directed by Karan Johar and starring Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, and Rani Mukerji, the film went on to become a box-office blockbuster, adored by fans even today. Its soundtrack also made waves, becoming the best-selling Bollywood album of the year with eight million copies sold in India.
