Karan Johar discusses casting Jaya Bachchan in ‘nasty character’ for Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani; says, “That was her personality on celluloid”

Renowned actress Jaya Bachchan garnered acclaim for her portrayal in director Karan Johar's latest successful movie, Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani. In the film, she portrayed the character of Dhanalakshmi Randhawa, the influential matriarch of the affluent Randhawa family and the grandmother of Rocky (Ranveer Singh). Jaya's achievement in the role was evident as numerous viewers took exception to her character, and a particular admirer conveyed his dissatisfaction with the character to Karan during the recent Express Adda event held in Mumbai.

During a recent discussion with The Indian Express, the director was questioned about his decision to select veteran actress Jaya Bachchan for a ‘nasty’ character. In his response, Karan explained that this choice was intentional and aimed at offering her a distinct role from her usual positive portrayals. He mentioned, “It was actually to cast against type. She has such a wonderful image on and off the screen. She is a mother figure to me. So, when I wanted to cast against type, I thought it would be a great role for her to go against what she has done. She is like goody… that was her personality on celluloid. So, sometimes it is nice to shake things up,” Karan disclosed.

 

For the unversed, Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani marked the return of the Gully Boy for the second time on the big screen after four years. The film also had Karan Johar coming back to direction after seven years. Starring veteran stars like Jaya Bachchan, Shabana Azmi, and Dharmendra in pivotal roles, the film also featured an ensemble cast of Kshitee Jog, Churni Ganguly, Tota Roy Chowdhury, Aamir Bashir, Anjali Anand, Namit Das, Abhinav Sharma, among others. The film released on July 28.
