Koffee With Karan 8: Sharmila Tagore reminisces iconic bikini shoot on the couch

In a candid and unfiltered conversation on the latest episode of Koffee With Karan Season 8, veteran actress Sharmila Tagore, accompanied by her son Saif Ali Khan, revisited some iconic moments from her illustrious career. The discussion began with host Karan Johar bringing up Sharmila Tagore's famous bikini photoshoot from the 60s, a bold move that stirred headlines during an era when such choices were unconventional.

Addressing the renowned bikini shot, Karan Johar expressed, “Your famous bikini shot... You know the shot I am talking about. Nobody else wanted it to happen. Even the photographer had some anxiety issues about doing that." Sharmila Tagore candidly acknowledged the reference, recalling, "Yes, I do." Saif Ali Khan added a humorous anecdote, sharing, "People in my boarding school used to ask me, is that your mum? I was very proud of it."

 

Reflecting on the shoot and its aftermath, Sharmila Tagore revealed, “Yes, the photographer was slightly worried, and I just thought I looked very nice. It really hurt me later because everybody interpreted it in such a way that I was upwardly mobile, I was trying to catch eyeballs. I didn't feel like that.” She recounted being unaware of the reactions until filmmaker Shakti Samanta informed her while she was in London. “When it came out in Filmfare, I was in London and I was unaware till Shakti (Samanta) ji called me and said, will you come back quickly? There are terrible things happening here. He said if you want to be in the public eye, this is not the way to go,” she added.

 

The discussion shed light on an era when such bold choices were met with both admiration and criticism, offering a glimpse into Sharmila Tagore's fearless approach to her career and the timeless impact of her choices.
