Priyanka Chopra Jonas talks about her ‘glam roles’ of wearing saree amid snow-clad mountains; says, “I was standing in a bucket of hot water for the close-up”

We all know Bollywood as the commercial cinema which features heroines dancing in chiffon sarees amid snow-clad mountains. In the 90s and early 2000s, many actresses retained this trend and Priyanka Chopra Jonas, who had no prior connection to Bollywood, entered the industry with a certain picture in mind. She confessed that she grew up to watching Sridevi and Madhuri Dixit playing ‘heroines’ in films and never believed she would be doing the same one day because she never believed that she would become an actor, in the first place.

In Film Companion’s Master Class at the Jio MAMI Film Festival 2023 in Mumbai, Priyanka Chopra Jonas recalled playing one such role where she was seen wearing a chiffon saree in Switzerland. She opened up about the experience saying, “The first time was when I was in a green chiffon saree, in Jungfrau, Switzerland. Obviously, the guy is dressed in head-to-toe in fur and I am in a blouse and chiffon saree and I was standing in a bucket of hot water for the close-up. And I am saying the lines like this, (chatters teeth) and on top of it there is a helicopter above because we are taking a helicopter shot. My co-actor is trying to keep me warm and there is a hot water bucket under my saree. Not glamour guys, not glamorous.”

 

She further opened up about her transition to other kind of roles she chose, adding, “So, for me, the glamour of the movies became recognizing my characters, understanding these girls. It looks beautiful, and even now I want to have my hair blowing. The glamour of it was taken away from me very quickly and I just started enjoying the medium of work and the possibility of what you can do with the characters.”

 

Priyanka Chopra Jonas is known for her unconventional roles in films like Aitraaz, Fashion, Barfi, Bajirao Mastani, The Sky Is Pink, among others.
