Vishal Bhardwaj hails 12th Fail as a "Silver lining" for independent cinema: "It is pure filmmaking by Vidhu Vinod Chopra"

Filmmaker Vishal Bhardwaj, known for his critically acclaimed movies like Maqbool and Haider, has expressed optimism for independent cinema, citing the recent success of 12th Fail as a "silver lining" in an uncertain market. In a press conference at the Jaipur Literature Festival 2024, Bhardwaj acknowledged the difficulties independent filmmakers face in securing funding.

"There was a time when films like Haider and Dev D got funding easily," he said, according to a PTI report. "Now, everyone's scared, wondering what will work in theaters." However, Bhardwaj finds hope in the success of 12th Fail, a low-budget film starring Vikrant Massey that defied expectations by reaching almost Rs. 60 crores at the Indian box office.

 

He praised the film, saying, "A silver lining in this is the success of 12th Fail. There is no star, there is no weirdness, and the background score is also beautiful. It is pure filmmaking by Vidhu Vinod Chopra and I think this is his best film."

 

Bhardwaj believes the film's success indicates that audiences are open to diverse content beyond spectacle-driven blockbusters. "The kind of success and love the film got shows that the audience is there to watch every kind of film," he said, "but it must be worth it for them to come to theaters."

 

Bhardwaj acknowledged the challenges of navigating a film market dominated by big-budget action films. "We are all exploring whether films like Animal will work or a film like Jawan or Pathaan or a mindless south Indian action film. It is all imbalanced," he concluded.
