Beef creator Lee Sung Jin and executive producers and stars Steven Yeun and Ali Wong have all spoken out after David Choe’s sexual assault comments that recently resurfaced online.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, up until now, the only response from any of the parties involved appeared to be copyright claims from Choe’s foundation requesting that clips of the podcast episode be removed from social media. Meanwhile, Lee Sung Jin, Wong and Yeun issued a joint statement Friday that read, “The story David Choe fabricated nine years ago is undeniably hurtful and extremely disturbing.”

 

“We do not condone this story in any way, and we understand why this has been so upsetting and triggering. We’re aware David has apologized in the past for making up this horrific story, and we’ve seen him put in the work to get the mental health support he needed over the next decade to better himself and learn from his mistakes.”

 

Choe came under fire for the comments that he made on his now-discontinued podcast "DVDASA" in 2014. The video recently resurfaces online where Choe describes coercing a masseuse to perform oral sex on him. As the report shares, he alternately called himself a “successful rapist” and conceded his actions were “rapey behavior,” while denying being a rapist.

 

After the story briefly went viral at the time, Choe apologized in the statement to anyone who "believed that the stories were fact," and claimed that he made up the story “as a complete extension of my art.” He apologized once more for his previous comments, in a 2017 Instagram post, reiterating that he "did not commit those actions" as described.

 

He also mentioned that he had sought mental health treatment in the years that followed.
