While a 16 minute satirical take on Draupadi and her five husbands has been released on the web, the director of the same, Akshat Verma is facing the brunt for the same from various Hindu groups. Right-wing organizations have raised objection over the short film's content claiming that it has insulted a holy epic saga like Mahabarata.
Akshat Verma reacts to Hindu groups objecting to his short film on Draupadi’s swayamvarThe film titled Mama's Boys featuring Aditi Rao Hydari as Draupadi and veteran actress Neena Gupta as Kunti showcases the day when Kunti accidentally asks her son Arjun who has won over Draupadi to distribute his win amongst his brothers. What follows is a series of jokes of how each brother reacts to the news. According to organizations like Hindu Mahasabha and Hindu Sena, the film features sexual inneundos, cuss words and even portrays brothers Nakul and Sahadev to be gay which they find extremely offensive.
On the other hand, Akshat Verma expressed that he wasn't prepared for this kind of negative reaction. While he repeatedly maintained that he had no intention of offending anyone, he also mentioned that it was only a small incident that fascinated him and he wanted to just do something different with it. Further talking about how it is unhealthy for a nation to be inacceptable to novel ideas and a sense of humour, Akshat also added that alternative point of view doesn't exist here and that he doesn't know if this will be favourable towards a young and progressive nation like India.
