When Ram Gopal Varma had stated in his earlier tweet that he would be willing to give Maria Susairaj an opportunity to act in a film of his, the lady - who is now out of jail - must have indeed felt elated. However, little did she know that this 'khushi' would soon turn into 'gham', what with the director even refusing to show her the very film which is based on her life. Worse, the only woman she could have turned for support, Mahie Gill (who is enacting her part for the big screen), has never been in mood to meet her either.
"I don't want to meet anyone, whether it is Maria or anyone else", says Mahie who is playing an aspiring actress in Not A Love Story, "I really don't know what's happening around her life. I was not even in the country when Maria came out of jail. Even then I couldn't find a good enough reason to meet her as the film was already over and done with. Ever since then so much has been happening around her, the case and our film but I am basically concentrating on promotional activities than worry about meeting or not meeting anyone."
This is pretty much a double jolt for Maria who could well have been hoping that at least the woman in Mahie would make her sympathise with her cause. However, after the legal notice that she sent to Ramu to show her the film before its theatrical release, Maria would now be looking at another resort to have her voice heard. Though her lawyer continues to insist that Ramu bows down to his client's demand, the director is undeterred.
He is finding support from his leading lady as well. "Ab milke kya karna hai. Yes, earlier when I had started working on the character, I had pondered over meeting Maria but then later opted out of it. I had thought that maybe I would have learnt something from her but then Ramu has written the character so differently for the film that it just didn't make any sense. I am playing a Punjabi girl while she is a South Indian; everything is bound to be different", reasons Mahie.
One wonders whether Maria would indeed buy this. With no one in B-town really standing up for her cause, Maria's current positioning is pretty much like that of a jilted lover who is finding hard to find a meaning in her 'love story' that has certainly going sour.
