Karan Johar never quite hid his displeasure when some of his proteges decided to break away from his production house after enjoying a high profile launch. Some of the most notable instances were that of Soham Shah and Nikhil Advani who decided to move on after making Kaal and Kal Ho Na Ho. 'Once bitten twice shy' could well be the filmmaker's 'mantra' as is obvious in the professional ties that he is sharing with his newer bunch of directors. No wonder, both Karan Malhotra and Shakun Batra, directors of Agneepath and Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu respectively, are contractually bound to make three films with him.
"He is a great mentor and gives freedom to newer bunch of directors. In fact he is the only independent filmmaker other than big guns like Chopras who has already launched the career of a dozen odd directors. However, he has to keep the ball rolling for his office as well. He can't afford to have newcomers get all their 'on the job training' at Dharma and then branch out for green pastures soon after. He deserves loyalty in return and a three film contract is to safeguard that on paper", says a close associate.
Shakun Batra as well as Karan Malhotra did confirm that they are contractually bound by Karan Johar. However they were non-committal about their next projects, as yet.
"Yes, I am bound for three films. To be honest though all my planning till date has been on Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu. I have spent two years on it. Let people react to it first and then we will talk about the rest", says Shakun.
Karan Malhotra too sung the same time. "It is Agneepath, Agneepath and only Agneepath for me as of now. The kind of pressure that I am going through for the film is something really really enjoyable. As for the contract then well yes, I am with Dharma for three films. If I get an opportunity to get started on the next one now, I would love to take it up."
Karan Johar didn't quite go through the nitty gritty of the logistics involving the contracts. However he did conclude on a positive note. He said, "I have a young brigade of talented, vibrant and energetic filmmakers attached to me. I am happy with these makers."
