The winner of Dadasaheb Phalke award, Majrooh Sultanpuri, the poet emeritus, and the leading light of the Indian Left movement passed away on Wednesday night due to lung failure.
Majrooh leaves behind his wife, son and a daughter. He passed away at the Leelavati hospital in Bandra. He was admitted ten days earlier with severe lung problems.
Regarded as the one of the greatest Urdu poets, in league of Faiz Ahmed Faiz, Majrooh was best known for his romanticism in lyrics. The public acclaim for his songs like Jab Usne Keshu Bikrahe and Gum Diya Mustakil from his first film Shahjehan vaulted him to the top. He had penned lyrics for 350 films over 50 years.
Haal Kaisa Hai Janaab Ka from the film Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi and Chod Do Achal Jamaana Kya Kahega from the film Nau Do Gyarah are few of his best know works. His other hit films include Tumsa Nahi Dekha, Phir Wohi Dil Laya Hoon and Mere Sanam. His last work was for Hum To Mohabbat Karega, which has just been released.
He composed in Aarti and Bheegi Raat for music director Roshan in which songs like Aap ne yaad dilaya to mujhe yaad aaya, Kabhi to milegi baharon ke manzil rahee and Dil jo na keh saka wahi raaz-e-dil proved to be superhits.
Majrooh penned lyrics for over 74 films for R D Burman with the most famous being Teesri Manzil, the evergreen blockbuster of the '60s starring Shammi Kapoor and Asha Parekh and Mela starring Sanjay Khan and Mumtaj.
He had worked with all directors in Bollywood from Chandragupt, his sons Anand-Milind, S D & R D Burman, O P Nayyar and Rajesh Roshan.
