The Maharashtra Government has imposed an additional 10% entertainment tax on movie tickets priced above Rs. 250. The decision was taken at a weekly cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan..

Movie tickets priced below Rs. 250 will however see no extra tax being charged on them. Besides, in a move to encourage Marathi cinema, the Government has decided to stipulate 'a maximum entry charge' of Rs 200 in multiplexes and Rs 100 in single-screen theatres for Marathi films shown during the prime time. Moreover, single-screen theatres in rural areas have been granted a 7 year holiday on entertainment tax while single-screen theatres in A, B, and C category municipal councils have been given entertainment tax relief of 5 years.

Maharashtra has approx. 81 multiplexes and over 549 single-screen theatres.
