The drastic cuts that the Examining Committee (EC) of the Censor Board Of Film Certification (CBFC) ordered for Shonali Bose's hugely anticipated Margarita With A Straw about a girl battling prejudice and cerebral palsy, have all been turned down by the Revising Committee (RC).
The CBFC's RC on Friday cleared the film with just two cuts as opposed to the drastic multi-cuts, that the EC had ordered.
Says a source, "It was as though the RC, which also comprises members of the RSS, was hell-bent on disproving its anti-liberal allegations. Most of the cuts ordered by the EC including the long sequence of Kalki Kochlin and her-costar Sayani Gupta locked in lesbian kiss, have been left intact."
Says a source from the CBFC, "We only cut two scenes. One is a shot where Sayani Gupta's breast is visible on screen. The other is a love-making scene which we've reduced in length, that's all. All the rest including shots of lesbian kissing, Kalki showing the middle finger in protest and her underwear being removed for a pee, have been retained by the RC."
Delighted by the turn of events the film's leading lady Kalki Koechlin says, "I am ecstatic about how little of the film has been lost in certification. Credit goes to my director Shonali Bose for standing up for the spirit of the film, and my character."
Ajit Andhare, the COO of film's producers Viacom 18 says, "Margarita With A Straw is a beautiful film exploring territory that is so far uncharted in Indian cinema. We are delighted to get the censor certification."
