Filmmaker Park Chan Wook’s investigative romance drama Decision to Leave has been selected to represent South Korea at the Academy Awards 2023 in Best International Feature Film category.

As shared by Korea JoongAng Daily, Decision to Leave follows police detective Hae Jun, portrayed by actor Park Hae Il, who begins to fall for a suspect: a Chinese widow named Seo Rae, portrayed by Tang Wei. The pair meet after Hae Jun begins to investigate a mysterious death of a man — Seo Rae’s husband — who was found dead after falling from a mountain.

The Korean Film Council said Thursday evening that the film would be shown in the best international feature category where only one film per country is allowed to be submitted. The film also earned director Park the best director award at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival.

The crime drama, which first debuted at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, premiered in South Korea in June, and will open in US and UK cinemas on October 14. It will then begin to stream on the service MUBI. The 95th Academy Awards 2023 is scheduled for March 12.
