I would first like to clear the myth or perception of any film being the 'highest grosser'. What is the criteria to decide this? Being a veteran filmmaker myself, I can tell you that any film that brings in two to three times the business of its entire cost is a super hit. If not, then it has to be considered as an average film or in the B category. That is the only way to categorise movies.
This year, The Dirty Picture proved that it is a mass as well as a class film that worked at all levels. It made a business three times of its total expenditure, which is very good. The script was excellent, direction was worth every praise it got and the performances were outstanding, deserving all the accolades. It was a very bold attempt at filmmaking. A movie made at ` 20 cr that too without any superstar, it has raked a moolah of ` 75 cr till date. Moreover, it was a heroine-oriented film, which is rare when male-oriented or male-bonding films rule the roost. The subject, too, was entertaining and served to be an eye-opener.
The second film that comes to my mind is superstar Salman Khan's Bodyguard. A complete entertainer, it was also the highest grosser led by a solo hero. It had all the ingredients of an entertainer.
Next I would recommend Zindagi Milegi Na Dobara. A fantastic film, it was a contemporary movie for youth without any high-voltage drama. It fared very well at the box office and had a longer run at the theaters, which shows the strength of the film as a whole.
In 2011, the audience's taste changed drastically. The mass audience is also growing and they like to watch the '80s kind of cinema along with metro-centric films. They are smart enough and know what they want and if that is delivered to them, then they lap it up thereby making a film hit.
