Box Office: Ranbir Kapoor-Katrina Kaif-Anurag Basu’s Jagga Jasoos opens on the same lines as Barfi!, collects Rs. 8.57 crore on Day 1 :Bollywood Box Office

Considering the fact that the team of Barfi! [UTV - now Disney, Ranbir Kapoor, Anurag Basu] has come together for Jagga Jasoos, the film has followed the same release strategy as well. Back in 2012 when Barfi! (with Priyanka Chopra and Ileana D'Cruz as the leading ladies) was set to arrive, there was a controlled release strategy followed. The idea was to have word of mouth do the talking instead of a large number of screens ensuring a quick-fire opening. It was a risk back then too since the film was an expensive affair and an all around rejection would have meant doom for it over the first weekend itself.

Now the team of Jagga Jasoos, this time with Katrina Kaif as the leading lady, has taken this risk as well though one can say that it is a calculated one. The film was in any case not expecting an opening day of over 10 crore and hence a large number of screens wouldn't really have helped the cause. As a matter of fact that would have meant lesser occupancy which would only have seemed like a sore sight.

Hence, with a release at just over 1800 screens in India, the film has managed an opening day of Rs. 8.57 crore which is on the same lines as Barfi! [Rs. 8.5 crore]. One also needs to consider the fact though that these numbers were half a decade back and hence were better. Nonetheless, it had also grown tremendously hence leading to a weekend of Rs. 34.25 crore.

In case of Jagga Jasoos though this is not seemingly possible where weekend collections would turn out to be four times that of the opening day. The film has seen mixed reviews coming its way and the word of mouth is yet to catch up as well. The good news though is that there is no competition from Hindi films. However, from Hollywood there is too much of competition, what with Spider-Man: Homecoming still running and War for the Planet of the Apes releasing alongside. Both these biggies cater to the same target audience i.e. kids and youth, which means Jagga Jasoos has task cut out for it in days to come.
