Abhay Deol's critically acclaimed film, Dev D, marked its 15th anniversary today, prompting the actor to share a fascinating anecdote about its inception. The 2009 romantic black comedy is a modern retelling of Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay's Devdas. Taking to Instagram, Deol shared the film's poster and delved into his initial pitch to director Anurag Kashyap. He envisioned a "contemporary, musical version of Devdas with a drastically different ending".
"The shock and excitement on his face is etched in my memory," Deol wrote, describing his unconventional proposal. He envisioned Dev, his character, dying in a police shootout, reflecting his descent into drug dealing. However, Kashyap opted for a more hopeful climax, granting Dev a chance at redemption. While Deol expressed curiosity about his original vision's outcome, he acknowledged the success of the chosen ending.
"My ending was different...but the happy ending gave my character redemption, and it clearly worked," he admitted. "I still wonder where we would be had we killed him off. Dev the drug dealer, the original chauvinist, he was always far beyond redemption for me from the start lol." Deol also hinted at a return to development, stating, "Either way, I have never pitched another idea to anyone in the industry since then. Maybe I should start focusing on development once again."
