Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, one of the most loved films of all time, completes 25 years today. This love saga, starring Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol and Rani Mukerji with Salman Khan in a special appearance, was released in cinemas on October 16, 1998 and was an instant blockbuster. Bollywood Hungama, over the years, has exclusively broken the news about censor cuts in the upcoming films. Today, on the 25th anniversary of Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, we reveal the lesser-known aspect of the audio cut that the Karan Johar directorial had to go through.

According to Komal Nahta's Film Information Magazine's October 10, 1998 issue, the modification took place in the dialogue where Rahul (Shah Rukh Khan) meets Tina (Rani Mukerji) for the second time. The original dialogue was “Hum har ek naye student ko rag karte hain, pareshaan karte hain”.

The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) had reservations about the word ‘rag’ and also ‘pareshan’. This is because Indu Anto, a 16-year-old FYJC student of Sophia College, had committed suicide after allegedly being ragged by her seniors. The death took place on August 4, 1998, that is, around two months before the release of Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. It threw the spotlight on college ragging like never before and was a major talking point.

Keeping this incident in mind, the CBFC asked Karan Johar to remove the word ‘rag’. As per the story in Film Information Magazine, Karan Johar agreed to make the change as he felt that the hero of the masses, Shah Rukh Khan, shouldn’t send wrong signals to the youngsters, even in a lighter vein.

As a result, the dialogue was changed to “Hum har ek naye student ko gavate hai, you know, pa dha ni sa” from “Hum har ek naye student ko rag karte hain, pareshaan karte hain”. In fact, if one observes closely, one can see the difference in the lip sync which occurred due to the change of dialogue.

Once this change was made, the CBFC granted the censor certificate to the makers of Kuch Kuch Hota Hai on September 30, 1998. The length of the film, as mentioned on the certificate, was 5071.49 meters and 18 reels.
