Akshay Kumar recently shed light on why he changed his name from Rajiv Bhatia, revealing a story that diverges from popular belief. Speaking with Galatta Plus, Akshay shared that his decision was not influenced by a priest’s suggestion but by his admiration for his co-star in his debut film. In 1987, Akshay made his first appearance in Mahesh Bhatt's film Aaj. Although Kumar Gaurav was the lead, Akshay's encounter with him left a lasting impact.

In the interview, Akshay recalled, “Do you know what was Kumar Gaurav’s name in the film? Akshay. That’s how I got my name. Not many people know this. So, my real name is Rajiv, and during the shoot, I just casually asked what is the name of the hero in the film, they said Akshay, I told them, I want to keep my name as Akshay!” This decision marked a significant moment in his career, as it symbolized his entry into the film industry under a new identity.

Akshay also mentioned that Rajiv Gandhi was the Prime Minister of India at that time, adding another layer of context to his decision. He explained, “Rajiv is a good name and I think back then, Rajiv Gandhi was the Prime Minister or something. So it was a great name but I changed it just aise hi (just like that).” Contrary to the notion of a pandit's advice, Akshay's name change was a spontaneous choice, driven by the excitement of his debut.

Family reactions

Akshay's father was initially puzzled by his decision. “My father also asked me, what’s wrong with you? But I told him the same, that the hero’s name in my first film was this, so I will keep it!” Despite the confusion, Akshay's choice has undoubtedly paid off, as he has become one of Bollywood's most beloved and successful actors.
