Over the past few months, environment activists as well as common men have put out an united show of protest, opposing the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's tree Authority's decision to chop off 27,000 trees in Mumbai's Aarey forest for a metro car shade. It met with wide protests all across the city and a petition signed by over 80,000 people was also submitted. The felling of trees was halted and the court is to hear the petition on September 30. Meanwhile, megastar Amitabh Bachchan has drawn flack after defending the metro project.
"Friend of mine had a medical emergency, decided to take METRO instead of his car .. came back very impressed .. said was faster, convenient and most efficient .. Solution for Pollution ..Grow more trees .. I did in my garden .. have you," he tweeted. This resulted in activists standing outside Bachchan's Mumbai residence, upholding banners. Some of those banners voiced against felling of trees in Aarey while some reminded him that gardens couldn't be alternatives to forests.
On the other hand, Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation chief Ashwini Bhide appreciated the actor's stand. “Thank u @SrBachchan ji fr depicting d importance of #Metro so succinctly. Thank you for ur support”, she tweeted.
