The trend of remixes is here to stay, though many have objected to it. Yet, recreated versions of famous old tracks continue to be composed and even get lapped up. A recent example is 'What Jhumka?' from Ranveer Singh-Alia Bhatt-Jaya Bachchan-Shabana Azmi-Dharmendra starrer Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani. Though the song only uses the hook line and signature theme from the song of Mera Saaya (1966), it became the USP and one of the big reasons why it has worked wonders in the Karan Johar-directorial.

Asha Bhosle recently spoke to Rajdeep Sardesai of India Today and when asked about remixes, she said, “Zamana badal jaata hai. Fast badal raha hai. Aur badlega. You can’t stop it. The music directors don’t have the ability (to compose original songs). Hence, they recreate old songs. For instance, aaj ‘Jhumka Gira Re’ kitna chal raha hai. It has come in a new film. It’s such an old song.”

Rajdeep Sardesai, at this point, revealed that the late Indira Gandhi also mentioned the original song when she met Asha Bhosle. The singer revealed, “She told me, ‘Bareilly mein aaiye. Aapka jhumka le jaaiye’!”

When asked what makes these songs evergreen, she replied, “Inn gaano mein bol bhi hai, awaaz bhi hai, music bhi hai. It’s the combination of all three factors. And that’s not all. If the cinematographer had not shot the songs well, toh picture acchi nahin hoti hai. It’s a team effort. Har ek ka saath hona chahiye.”

Asha Bhosle was then asked if the music composers worked harder in the olden days. Asha Bhosle nodded and explained, “Purane gaane mein mehnat hoti thi. When the lyricist would sit down to compose a song, the music director would say, ‘Yeh word nahin chahiye mujhe. Yeh chahiye’. Bade bade writer ke saath music director lad jaate the. Both sides worked hard. For example, there’s a song ‘Jaaiye aap kahan jaayenge, yeh nazar laut ke fir aayegi’ (Mere Sanam; 1965). Look how beautifully it has been penned and even composed. Aur maine gaaya toh accha hai hi (laughs).”
