South Korean drama Crazy Love, starring Kim Jae Wook alongside female group f(x)’s Krystal, recently premiered on March 7, 2022. The drama chronicles a savage and chaotic love story between Noh Go Jin (played by Kim Jae Wook), a narcissistic boss and a math genius who pretends amnesia after he receives death threats, and his introverted, hardworking secretary Lee Shin Ah (played by Krystal) whose life takes an unexpected turn when she finds out that she doesn’t have much time to live. Ahead of the third episode airing tonight, let’s look at the show.
THE CHARACTERS
The first episode begins with a dramatic entry of top math instructor Noh Go Jin, CEO of the nation's leading online education company GoTop Education. He is an oblivious narcissist who is crazy about money and gives a hard time to people around him. We are then introduced with the hardworking female lead Lee Shin Ah, who has successfully lasted a year being the secretary of her notoriously arrogant boss Go Jin. She is an introvert not much of a presence in the office and dreams of becoming an instructor.
The episode also introduces Oh Se Gi (played by Ha Joon), Deputy CEO of GoTop Education who is suspiciously kind and apparently a crush of Shin Ah. He is also the only person who can comfort Go Jin. The supporting characters include Yoo In Young as Baek Soo Young, Jo In as Kim Hye Sun, and Yoon San Ha as Lee Suho.
THE PLOT
As the name suggests, the drama is about the twisted and crazy love story between the polar-opposite leads. The first episode introduces us to the main characters and their contrasting personalities, laying a foundation for the story. At the beginning of the premiere episode, Noh Go Jin is seen at someone’s gunpoint and minutes into the episode, it is revealed that he has been receiving death threats. As episode one came to conclusion, Shin Ah gets diagnosed with cancer following which she undergoes a drastic personality change and decides to get revenge on her arrogant boss. Episode two opens with her reflecting on her stressful past and how she put up with Go Jin's prickly and sensitive personality for over a year.
Outraged by the fact that she doesn’t have much time left, despite all her hard work that put her through hair loss and other chronic conditions, she directs her anger at Go Jin and visits him at his vacation house and attempts to hit him with a hammer. However, she doesn’t and just slaps the resignation letter at his face screaming out her anger, and leaves after a squabble. What follows then is a cat and mouse run with furious Go Jin running behind Shin Ah but eventually fails to catch her. In the middle of the road, screaming at Shin Ah on call, Go Jin is hit by a car (less likely an accident) and rushed to hospital. When he wakes up with amnesia, revengeful Shin Ah decides to act up and declares herself as his fiancée. The preview of the next episode gives us a glimpse of how Shin Ah takes advantage of his amnesia and as a way of treating his ‘fake fiancée’, she plans on torturing him in order to make him pay back.
THE VERDICT
Crazy Love is sort of similar when it comes to the typical enemies-to-lovers trope but unlike usual romance; they start on the most dramatic, comic-style note. The over-the-top editing, the dreamy chaotic sequences are easily bizarre but also interesting to watch. The newest addition to “office romance” drama, with the not-so-typical plot, has graced our screens with a bizarre rom-com feeling which seems fun and interests us to know how the romance blossoms with a bloody twist between the two completely opposite and equally eccentric leads. Krystal Jung’s psychotic acting and Kim Jae Wook’s portrayal of a narcissistic CEO keep us hooked to witness their savage chemistry in the forthcoming episodes. The drama has its not-so-fun moments and it might not be as appealing as plenty of Korean airing currently that give so much excitement to the fans. It will be interesting to see how this boss-secretary relationship and a promise of revenge turn into love, promising a fun battle between the crazy set of people.
Crazy Love airs every Monday and Tuesday at 21:30 KST.
