As Doctor Who celebrates its 60th anniversary next year, the long-running British series dropped it official teaser featuring David Tennant, Catherine Tate, Ncuti Gatwa and Neil Patrick Harris.
The BBC has released a teaser for Doctor Who’s 60th anniversary special episodes which features both Tennant and Tate who both departed the series in 2010. The teaser video also offered a look at Neil Patrick Harris and Ncuti Gatwa, who was announced in May as Whittaker's replacement.
As Entertainment Weekly notes, the BBC has confirmed that Tennant and Tate will appear in three 60th anniversary special episodes. Ncuti Gatwa, who had been expected to make his debut on the show at the end of Sunday's episode, will then take control of the TARDIS, with his first episode airing over the festive period in 2023.
"If you thought the appearance of David Tennant was a shock, we've got plenty more surprises on the way!" said showrunner Russell T. Davies in a statement. The path to Ncuti's Fifteenth Doctor is laden with mystery, horror, robots, puppets, danger and fun! And how is it connected to the return of the wonderful Donna Noble? How, what, why? We're giving you a year to speculate, and then all hell lets loose!"
Ncuti Gatwa, popularly known as Eric Effiong in British Netflix dramedy Sex Education, will be the new Doctor as he takes over the role from Jodie Whittaker who was the first female Doctor since 2017. Gatwa becomes the second Black actor to portray a doctor, following Jo Martin, who was seen in the role of “Fugitive Doctor” Ruth Clayton in a 2020 episode of Doctor Who.
Doctor Who 60th Anniversary special is set to return to BBC in November 2023 with three episodes. Watch the teaser below!
