Amitabh Bachchan is easily one of the biggest stars from Hindi cinema. He has given his valuable contribution to a long list of films. But along with success, the veteran actor has also seen some bad days. He faced one such phase over 20 years ago when he suffered huge losses after a number of films, he produced didn’t work at the box office.
His financial crunch was so severe that he once went up to director and close friend Yash Chopra asking for work. This is how he bagged Mohabbatein, which was directed by Aditya Chopra and starred Shah Rukh Khan. The film worked out well and his character of Narayan Shankar was also appreciated. There was no looking back for the veteran after this.
But during this phase, Mohabbatein wasn’t the only film where Bachchan asked for a role. He did the same with Ek Rishtaa: The Bond Of Love too. Suneel Darshan, the director of the film, shared this instance during a video interview with Bollywood Hungama.
“The buzz in the industry went around that I am doing my next film and there is a father’s role,” he said. “And I got this call from Mr Bachchan, and he expressed the desire to be a part of it. I was overjoyed. I was so honoured, to be honest. That was the only time in my life I felt I had arrived; when you get a call from a star and an actor who is on the stature of Amitabh Bachchan.”
Recalling the phase Bachchan was going through, Suneel Darshan added, “He wanted to comeback. He had just signed a movie with Yash Raj (Films), which was Mohabbatein and Karan Johar had signed him for Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham. Then Ek Rishtaa happened. He was doing a film for his own production called Aks.”
The filmmaker was stunned by Bachchan’s commitment and enthusiasm. They were compelled to shoot Ek Rishtaa in a span much shorter than what they planned before because Juhi Chawla, who was also starred in the film, got pregnant.
“Mr Bachchan was so generous,” he said. “He would shoot from 9 am to 6 pm for Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham and come to me at 7 pm every evening and shoot till 2 am every morning. That was his zeal and enthusiasm. I realized he was 58 then.”
Ek Rishtaa was largely about a bond between a father and his son, played by Bachchan and Akshay Kumar.
