Kaagaz 2, which is directed by VK Prakash and written and created by the late legend Satish Kaushik, tackles the out-of-the-box issue of the common man being harassed due to the roads being jammed from time to time for VIP movement and rallies. The film sees Satish Kaushik play the lead and it also stars Smriti Kalra, Anupam Kher and Darshan Kumaar.
During an exclusive chat with Bollywood Hungama, Smriti revealed her reaction after listening to the subject. “My reaction was the same as yours as to why someone didn’t make a film on this earlier (this writer had expressed the same at the start of the interview). The second thing I said is that we all face it, but we are so used to it. I said I can totally relate to it, and I would love to be a part of a film that raises a concern and comes up with a solution also.”
The trailer of Kaagaz 2, which released recently, has been met with positive reactions. Although it doesn’t give much screen time to Smriti, she has no complains. “I feel the promo has been cut very well,” she said. “I never thought even once that I wasn’t shown much in it because the trailer talks about the issue. Every person in this film highlights the main issue. And of course, this is Satish sir’s last film as an actor.”
When asked about her character in the movie, she said, “My character is about a girl who does slam poetry. I myself scribble on Instagram. I post photos and write whatever I feel. My character is confident, grounded and wholesome woman. She is a girl of today, but she is wholesome. She is active on social media. She uses this tool to help finding a solution to the problem we are talking about.”
Getting the role in Kaagaz 2 wasn’t easy for Smriti though. “It was during COVID time,” she said. “I was told that the casting of the film has been going on since one and a half years. I sent a self-test, and I was very confident that it will happen. But I got a call saying that maybe it’s not working out. So, I was very heartbroken. I thought they must have found someone better because I had done well.”
But there was a positive plot twist in store for her. “Later I got a call from Satish ji, and I was called in his office,” said Smriti. “He asked me to read whatever I have been writing. I said I only scribble what I feel like, and I am not a shayar or poet. He still asked me to recite. Whenever I post anything wearing in Indian attire (on Instagram), I write as a part of my series called, ‘Aaj phir us se mulakaat hui, aur phir hum dono ki na baat hui.’ It’s about a girl and a boy meeting in a situation but no conversation happens between them. He liked it and said that this is what I am looking for. He had seen my previous work also, including Cash.”
The trailer of Kaagaz 2 showed that the film points a finger towards politicians jamming roads because of their rallies and commotions. However, Smriti said that the film is not political.
“Politics is a part of our day-to-day life; in home, job or life itself,” she said. “Politics is about watching one issue from different point of views, relationships involved with it and what do you do with it. This is how country runs. This film is not at all politically driven. The promo talks about the plight of a common man. It shows about how our judiciary, any government and how you see it (the issue). So, it looks at every aspect. In the promo it says that freedom of movement is our right. The other person says that freedom of speech is also his right. And they debate about it.”
Produced by Shashi Satish Kaushik, Nishant Kaushik, Ganesh Jain and Ratan Jain, Kaagaz 2 will be released on March 1.
