EXCLUSIVE: Rakesh Roshan speaks about Krrish 4: “Nowadays, people watch superhero films from all over the world. These are made on very big budgets, and we don’t have those.”

The superhero genre is one of the most coveted ones for both filmmakers and moviegoers at the moment, thanks to the release of Brahmastra on September 9. The Ranbir Kapoor-starrer talks about a man who discovers his superpower and how he fights evil forces. While this genre is common in the West, in India, very few films have been made in this space. And Krrish (2006), starring Hrithik Roshan, was the first superhero film in Bollywood. It was quite loved, which prompted producer-director Rakesh Roshan to make its sequel, Krrish 3 (2013). It was also a super hit and now the makers are all set to make Krrish 4. On Krrish’s 9th anniversary on June 23, Hrithik hinted that Krrish 4 is in the offing.

Bollywood Hungama spoke to Rakesh Roshan exclusively on the occasion of his 73rd birthday. When asked about the latest update on Krrish 4, he said, “My scripting is almost done. It’s a big-budget film. The challenge for me is that in today’s day and age, people are aware of and watch superhero films from all over the world. These superhero films are made on very big budgets. And we don’t have such big budgets. So we have to make superhero films with very strong content and with newer ideas to come at par with the big-budget superhero movies. Meanwhile, Hollywood films are released all over the world. Our films are released in India and certain overseas territories with a huge South Asian diaspora and hence our box office potential is limited as compared to Hollywood. So, I am just waiting for the right time when the audiences would start flocking to the cinemas once again in big numbers.”

A lot of filmmakers are attempting to make cinematic universes with their characters. The makers of Brahmastra, for instance, also intend to introduce several superheroes and films will be made about them. Can we expect a Krrish Cinematic Universe at some point? To which, Rakesh Roshan replied, “Yes, why not? Krrish 4 actually has those elements.”

Krrish was the second part of the franchise and the series started with Koi Mil Gaya (2003). Its biggest USP was the alien, Jadoo. The cute creature, however, didn’t make an appearance in Krrish and Krrish 3. There were reports that Jadoo will make a comeback in Krrish 4.

When asked about it, Rakesh Roshan said, “It’s all there. But I can’t say much. All I can say is that it’s going to be a very emotional and commercial film.”
