Veteran film critic and trade analyst Taran Adarsh has said that single-screen theatres matter more than multiplexes in the Indian film industry.
Adarsh made the comments in an exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama, where he was discussing the recent success of the film Jawan. He said that a prominent single-screen owner from Patna, Bihar, had shared a video with him of the crowd that had come to watch the film.
Adarsh said that the business of single screens had been "pushed into the background" in recent years, as multiplexes had become more popular. However, he argued that single screens still played an important role in the industry.
"Don't underestimate the business of single screens," he said. "In the case of Gadar 2, 40% of the revenue came from multiplexes, and 60% or perhaps even more has come from mass-circuits and single screens."
Adarsh also said that producers and distributors should not forget the importance of "desi cinema". He said that films that are made for the masses are the ones that are most likely to succeed.
"Those who sit in their ivory towers and think that making films for Bandra to Versova will work, please forgive me, but no one watches such films," he said. "Not even your family members watch such films."
