Bollywood is all set to experience a major clash at the box office this Diwali as two of the most popular franchises are all set to face a showdown in terms of competition. On one hand, we have Rohit Shetty reviving the Singham franchise with Singham Again starring Ajay Devgn, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Arjun Kapoor, which is also a part of his ambitious copverse, featuring the story inspired by the mythological saga of Ramayana and promising a bevy of starry cameos including Salman Khan. On the other hand, we have the hit duo of Anees Bazmee and Kartik Aaryan returning with the horror comedy franchise as Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 releases with Vidya Balan and Madhuri Dixit also playing key roles.
Considering a star-studded weekend that sees many Bollywood stars coming together, audiences are definitely spoilt for choice. Meanwhile, as the release date nears, we have the trade analyst and renowned film critic Taran Adarsh discussing the clash and its repercussions with Bollywood Hungama. Hoping that both films do well, he opened up about how a Friday can change destinies. “You are known by your last Friday. And I have seen this for decades. I remember my conversation with Rajesh Khanna. It was when Amitabh Bachchan was riding at that time and Rajesh Khanna for was somewhere going down. He was so bothered by this and for that matter, even Amitabh Bachchan was so bothered about his Fridays doing well at the box office,” he told Bollywood Hungama.
Comparing with an example when Amitabh Bachchan had two back-back releases within a span of week and how both films failed to make an impact at the BO, Taran shared, “When Toofan and Jaadugar (1989) didn’t work. (I remember) They came within a gap of two weeks. First Toofan released, then after that Jaadugar. But both were disasters. (Whether) it is at that time (or otherwise), the thing is everyone gets shaken. As rightly pointed out, Ajay had a flop with Auron Mein Kahan Dum Tha and (the others who have seen their share of failures). I agree on everything but it takes only one Friday to change everything.”
He cited SRK as an example and continued, “Shah Rukh Khan ki kitni films aayi thi jo flop hui thi Pathaan se pehle (so many of his films flopped before Pathaan). But one Pathaan (2023) changed everything. Then came Jawan (2023). And again, people were like ‘wow, the King is back’. But the King went nowhere. He was always on the throne. I mean I still maintain that Shah Rukh Khan is Number one to Number Five.”
Also further adding how Animal placed Ranbir Kapoor back on a different league, the trade analyst pointed out, “He had a string of flops, Shah Rukh Khan had a string of flops but they all bounced back with one Friday. Who knows that this Friday could be the turning point for Singham and its entire cast. For Kartik Aaryan too! He may not have delivered numbers in Chandu Champion but he was excellent in it and it was a fantastic film - I am not denying that there. But sirf tareef se pet nahi bharta (only praises cannot lead to success). You have to back it up with box office numbers. And today, when you make an expensive film, the stakes are high. The thing is you need box office validation for it.”, he added.
