South Korean group EXO’s leader, singer SUHO, has made a comeback after a long wait! He was quick to release an album soon after his discharge from the military. SUHO released his second mini-album ‘Grey Suit’ on April 4, 2022. The mini-album contains six songs, each co-written by the singer. His moniker as a lyricist remains SH2O, for ‘H2O’ represents water which is his superpower in the EXO Universe. In the live countdown which premiered on YouTube, SUHO shared how much the album means to him as an artist. He dedicated the album to his fans, EXO-Ls saying he thought deeply about how EXO-Ls would find the lyrics and the music when making the album. MORNING STAR
The song begins with a rapidly rising bass guitar. The song is full of hope with lyrics like “I can feel the way I breathe / The day I had a long dream of / Slowly, becoming anew.” SUHO matches his vocals to the rapidly rising music. The song feels like it is plucked straight out of a futuristic music video with strobe lights buzzing in sync with the music.
GREY SUIT
The song might remind one of SUHO’s solo debut mini-album, Self Portrait. The title track of the same name and Grey Suit both carry familiar strains of rock music elements. SUHO’s vocals are ruminative of a love that coloured the protagonist’s life with beautiful colours – “The moment I encounter you, it turns into colors”. From the Brit-rock influences in the music to SUHO’s mind-blowing high pitch, Grey Suit is a poignant confluence of music and emotions.
HURDLE
SUHO named ‘Hurdle’ as his personal second favourite song from the album. The music video for ‘Hurdle’ will be released on April 7, 2022. SUHO called the song that speaks about ‘passing the hurdle of time to meet one’s lover’. The song uses city type noises and bass artfully to depict the ‘hurdle’ of passing time – “You're not by my side, but I'm running now / Why is my heart in a hurry, love's like a hurdle.”. Pop-rock music lends a lasting impression on the listeners.
DECANTING
SUHO resorts to low register singing in Decanting. The song is smooth just like a glass of wine. “The more I swallow, the more thirsty I get/I have to drink endlessly” – With these lyrics, he compares falling in love to drinking alcohol and getting drunk on the love. The jazzy beats are met with electronica and cast a striking balance. SUHO’s vocals are on occasion like whispers in the ears, and at times they are like a gentle caress.
BEAR HUG
Imagine your loved one wrapping you in the warmest and comfiest of hugs. That’s what it feels to listen to Bear Hug. The protagonist in the song sings about being a solace and pillar of support who gives a warm hug when needed the most - “Take your time/Come to me slowly/I'll be here for you/Come here into my arms”. The song begins with mellow piano tunes but soon progresses to highly emotional music.
MOMENT
With Moment, SUHO speaks about the fleeting moments which hold immense love and meaning. He sings with his heart and brings out the soul of the lyrics. The song is a perfect closing ballad for an album that speaks highly of emotions, love, and relationships. The occasional orchestral music elevates the feel of the overall song.
SUHO’s Grey Suit is the next step to his solo mini-album Self-Portrait. Where Self-Portrait spoke about one’s flaws and the growth that one goes through, Grey Suit speaks about how one’s love can colour another’s life in vivid colours. SUHO’s high pitch is something we have not heard before, and he too mentioned that he has developed this skill newly. He picks the perfect tone register to deliver each song.
