Chris Hemsworth, who has been cast to play the villain in the film, took to social media to announce that the highly-anticipated Furiosa, a Mad Max: Fury Road prequel has started filming.

Sharing a picture of a clipboard on social media, the Marvel actor wrote, “A new journey in the Mad Max saga begins.” The film, which also stars Anya Taylor-Joy, is based on Charlize Theron’s Imperator Furiosa character from 2015’s post-apocalyptic film Mad Max: Fury Road. After its delay in filming due to Covid-related issues, it was decided that the originally slated release date for June 2023 would have to be pushed back to May 2024.

George Miller, who worked on all four of the previous Mad Max films, is set to direct, co-write with Nico Lathouris and produce Furiosa along with his longtime producing partner Doug Mitchell. Not much is known about the plot for the prequel, besides the fact that it takes place prior to the events of Mad Max: Fury Road and its focus being on the lieutenant's origins, and that young Furiosa will be portrayed by Golden Globe-winner Anya Taylor-Joy. The character was first introduced in the 2015 movie, portrayed by Charlize Theron.
