Actor Gulshan Devaiah, who is busy promoting his upcoming series Dahaad, has recently made headlines with his candid remarks on the topic of nepotism in the entertainment industry. In a thought-provoking statement, Devaiah questioned the sincerity of influential individuals who claim to address the issue of nepotism but ultimately serve their own interests.

“People expect meritocracy. The arts cannot have meritocracy because you can’t measure it,” said Gulshan during his interaction with Chalchitra Talks. He explained, “A performance or someone’s talent is not quantifiable. You can have an educated opinion at best but it’s still a subjective opinion. How can you expect merit? It is about majority consensus. You want a majority consensus, that’s the game.”

The Blurr actor further added, “You want them to like you because that might lead to an opportunity.” The actor went on to express his viewpoint on the subjective nature of assessing actors' skills, specifically mentioning Rajkummar Rao. According to Devaiah, different individuals may have contrasting opinions on who is the superior actor, and both perspectives can be simultaneously right or wrong.

The Badhaai Do actor also emphasised that the only measurable aspect in the industry is the box office collections, but he regarded it as a deceptive metric as it is only applicable to prominent actors, rather than encompassing the entire spectrum of talent. Devaiah's remarks highlight the intricacies of evaluating acting prowess and the limitations of relying solely on commercial success as a benchmark.

The actor further stated that in recent years, several successful actors in influential positions have spoken up about nepotism. However, Gulshan believes that their motivations for doing so are self-serving. “There are some who are in a powerful position who have jumped in because everyone is speaking about nepotism, they are doing it for themselves, they are not sincere about this,” he said.

Coming to the professional front, as mentioned above, Gulshan’s latest project, Dahaad, is receiving a positive review. The Amazon Prime Video series started streaming on the OTT platform from May 12 onwards.
