Filmmaker Imtiaz Ali has spoken out against the recent negativity surrounding the Hindi film industry, often referred to as Bollywood. In a conversation with DNA India, Ali addressed the "Boycott Bollywood" trend and the claims that Bollywood is dying.
The renowned director shared that he has heard doubts about the industry's survival on multiple occasions throughout his career. He stated, "I've heard this 'Bollywood won't survive' talk many times before. When I entered the industry, people said theatres were finished. Similar claims were made when VCRs and colour televisions arrived."
The Jab We Met director further discussed the enduring spirit of cinema, attributing its survival to passionate individuals: "People have repeatedly said cinema will shut down, but it hasn't. It continues because of dreamers like us, those who watch and make films."
Speaking of the professional front, the 52-year-old filmmaker’s last project was Dr Arora, a Sony LIV web show starring Kumud Mishra. The eight-episode series started streaming on the OTT platform in 2022. Meanwhile, his last directorial film was Sara Ali Khan and Kartik Aaryan’s Love Aaj Kal, which was released in 2020. Despite creating hype, the film did not perform well at the box office.
Coming to Ali's upcoming film, Chamkila is set to premiere on Netflix on April 12. This biographical drama tells the story of the legendary Punjabi singer Amar Singh Chamkila, known as the Elvis Presley of Punjab. The film stars Diljit Dosanjh as Chamkila, with Parineeti Chopra portraying his wife and musical partner, Amarjot.
