While the entire media focus on Monday was on actor Sadashiv Amrapurkar's demise the celebrated choreographer Jay Borade also passed away quietly, unsung.
Says filmmaker Anil Sharma, "I got to know of his death only after his cremation. By then it was too late. Jay Master bade maze masti wale insaan they (he enjoyed having fun in life). He and his mentors Vijay-Oscar were all in the navy. They led a life filled with songs and dances. They would tell me stories of their adventures each time their ship docked in the shores. They carried the rhythm of endless dancing in season to the sets."
Anil Sharma who worked extensively with Borade, mourns and celebrates the going away of a dancing king. Says Anil, "Jai Master did all the songs in my Gadar. As you know that was a historic Friday when two of the biggest hits in the history of Indian cinema Gadar and Lagaan were released. I believe the music and dances went a long way in making Gadar such a success."
What Anil liked about Borade's way of working was the ability to blend with the plot. "The dances moved with the narrative. Whether it was Hum Aapke Hain Koun or Gadar, the dancing and singing blended with narrative. Jai Master only gave his stars the steps that suited the story."
The director recalls the dispute on the sets over Sunny Deol's signature steps in the songs Main Nikla Gadi Lekar. "We thought of many dance steps until Jay Master came up with the perfect moves for Sunny. Jay Master always did that. The actors danced in keeping with their character."
Recalling his long association with Jay Borade, Anil Sharma says, "Though it was in Gadar that Jay Master came to the forefront as a choreographer he was around in my earlier films too as an assistant to Oscar-Vijay. Whenever they weren't around Jay Master would choreograph the steps. Shooting was literally a song-and-dance."
