Mira Kapoor expresses regret over disparaging remarks about working mothers: “I was just trying to defend myself”

Actor Shahid Kapoor’s wife and entrepreneur Mira Rajput faced severe criticism in 2017 when she made comments about working mothers that were perceived as disparaging. At the time, she questioned why women would want to have children if they couldn’t spend time with them. Now, Mira has expressed regret over her past comments, clarifying that she never intended to demean working mothers.

In an interview with Film Companion, Mira Kapoor addressed one of the biggest misconceptions about her: that she “looked down upon working mothers.” She expressed her regret over the 2017 remarks, explaining that she felt cornered at the time. "I felt like I was pushed into a corner as people were questioning why an educated woman like me had chosen to be a stay-at-home mom and had taken a conventional, conservative approach in my life," she said. Mira found this line of questioning unfair and noted that she wanted to give time to her children during that period.

Mira Rajput recalls being “vulnerable”

Mira acknowledged that her comments were not well-received for a reason. "I can understand why it wasn’t taken well. I think I was in a vulnerable, emotional space. I was just trying to defend myself, asserting that my choices are also valid," she admitted. Mira expressed regret for her words, stating, "A lot of people were hurt by it."

She further added that she continues to receive criticism for those comments but has also received unwavering support from her husband, Shahid Kapoor. "When the controversy first happened, I got a lot of support from Shahid, as he had been dealing with the media for 14 years already," she shared.

She believes it’s time for her to be forgiven, as life comes full circle, and everyone makes mistakes. "I think it’s about time I am forgiven for that because life comes full circle and you make mistakes and you learn from them," she said.

Why was Mira Rajput trolled?

In 2017, during a Women’s Day event, Mira Kapoor made the comments that sparked the controversy. She said, "You know I can raise my daughter; I can be a good wife, I can set my house the way I like, not in terms of the way things should be but the way a home must be with its values and ideals. So, nothing will stop me after that, but I love being at home, I love being a mother to my child, I wouldn’t have it any other way. I wouldn’t want to spend one hour a day with my child and rush off to work. Why did I have her? She is not a puppy, you know. I want to be there for her as a mother, seeing her grow up cannot be quantified."
