Onir says, “Big Bollywood releases don’t care about smaller films,” after Karan Johar pens cryptic post over Merry Christmas-Yodha clash

Merry Christmas and Yodha will be released on the same day, December 15 this year.

Film director Onir has criticised the makers of big Bollywood releases for not caring about smaller films. In a Tweet, Onir said that makers of big releases get "so upset" when there is another big-budget release on the same day, but they "don't think for a second" when they, according to him, deprive a small-budget indie film of "a tiny number of good shows to survive."

Onir's tweet was in response to a post by Karan Johar, who expressed disappointment that his film Yodha will be clashing with Sriram Raghavan's Merry Christmas at the box office just before Christmas. Johar had said that it is not good for the industry if makers don't discuss the release dates of their films.

Onir, however, said that it is hypocritical of big filmmakers to talk about caring for the industry when they themselves are responsible for the plight of smaller films. He said that big releases take up all the screens and deprive smaller films of a chance to succeed.

Onir's comments have sparked a debate on social media, with some people agreeing with him and others defending big releases. He said that if big filmmakers really care about the industry, they should make an effort to give smaller films a fair chance to succeed.

For the unversed, Karan had written, “Clashing on a date without the courtesy of a phone call is hopefully not the way forward for the studios and producers …. If we don’t stand united in these tough and challenging theatrical days then calling us a fraternity is futile.”

Both Yodha and Merry Christmas are action entertainers starring big actors. Yodha stars Siddharth Malhotra, Disha Patani, and Raashi Khanna, while Merry Christmas stars Vijay Sethupathi and Katrina Kaif. The two films will be released on December 15, 2023.
