Salim Khan, along with Javed Akhtar, revolutionized Hindi cinema in the 1970s with their iconic screenplays. However, in recent times, Bollywood has faced stiff competition from South Indian films. In an interview with NDTV, Salim Khan shared his insights on why the audience is gravitating towards southern cinema.

Salim Khan on the Rise of South Cinema

Reflecting on the golden era of Hindi cinema, Salim Khan explained that Bollywood once had a unique appeal due to its captivating action sequences, melodious songs, and the allure of its heroines. He noted, “In our films, they [the audience] received great action, dance sequences, and beautiful actresses like Sridevi.” However, he observed that today, South films are offering all these elements, and in many cases, doing it better.

Khan added, "The movies we used to serve the audience, the content our Hindi films used to provide, those same elements are being offered by the South films. They have very good action, newer actresses, and great performances. So the audience has got a substitute, and that too, a better one."

Praise for RRR and the Southern Formula for Success

During the discussion, Salim Khan also praised SS Rajamouli’s RRR, which garnered massive success both critically and commercially. "The film has received a lot of publicity and people also loved it," he commented. RRR, starring Ram Charan and Jr NTR, has been a landmark in the rise of South cinema, demonstrating the immense potential of filmmakers from the region.

Khan attributes the South's success to their focus on quality entertainment. “Their songs are good. All the things are better than us (Bollywood). If viewers are getting better entertainment, they will of course get diverted,” he stated.
