The trailer of Raj Mehta’s Selfiee, which dropped yesterday through a grand launch, has been receiving a good response from the audience. The film stars Akshay Kumar and Emraan Hashmi for the first time together. The former plays a Bollywood superstar Vijay Kumar while the other actor will be seen in the role of an RTO officer.
As seen in the trailer, the film is about a war of sorts between a superstar and his fan. The theme, along with the fresh pairing of Akshay and Emraan, seems to have worked in favour of the trailer.
Directed by Raj Mehta, Selfiee is produced by Karan Johar under his banner of Dharma Productions. This is the third time that Akshay has teamed up with Karan as a producer after Kesari and Good Newwz. Interestingly, all three Akshay films with Dharma have been on subjects that are way different than one another.
Kesari was based on the Battle of Saragarhi of 1897 between Afghan and British Army. The latter had only 21 warriors and all of them were Sikhs. Akshay played the leader of the army of 21 that was pitted against hundreds of Afghan warriors. Kesari went onto earn Rs 154.41 crores at the box office, ensuring that Akshay and Karan’s first association turned out to be successful.
While Kesari was an emotional period drama, Good Newwz was an out and out contemporary comedy. Also starring Kareena Kapoor Khan, Diljit Dosanjh and Kiara Advani, the movie was a funny take on what happens when two set of sperms are mistakenly interchanged by an IVF centre. Good Newwz turned out to be an even bigger hit than Kesari as it took home Rs 205.14 crores at the India box office.
In an exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama at the end of 2019, Akshay had spoken about working with Karan. He had said, “It’s not often that a producer works with an actor in two such big films in one year. I am guessing that our collaboration is mutual because we admire and respect each other’s work ethic immensely. That’s why we are and want to continue making films together.”
While the two did work together again and made Selfiee, Akshay wants Karan to direct him one day. “I am just hoping that one day Karan will want to direct me, but he just keeps telling me that I make films too fast. Karan - the Producer loves me, Karan - the Director is hiding from me and my early morning shoots,” he added with a laugh.
