Subhash Ghai’s Pardes turned out to be one of the most iconic films of that era in 1997. Starring Shah Rukh Khan and Mahima Chaudhary, a large part of the film took place in America but it eventually gave a subtle message on the importance of being rooted to your home country, as per its title.
Pardes is known as the big launch for Mahima, but the film also starred another debutant in the form of Apurva Agnihotri. He recently went down memory lane on working in the film.
In an interview with Siddharth Kannan, Apurva said that Ghai had told him upfront that the film’s main focus would be on SRK and Mahima. “When Subhash ji called me, he told me Pardes was Shah Rukh Khan and Mahima Chaudhry’s film. He said that very clearly. But he also said, ‘I am introducing one more character in the film. If you do it well, you might end up becoming the surprise package of the movie,’” he said.
Apruva is all praise for Shah Rukh for the kind of behaviour he showed during the shoot. “All the credit goes to Shah Rukh Khan; he helped me out a lot. He was very kind. He was always surrounded by like 15-20 people. (When I first met him), he was wearing that Tommy Hilfiger shirt which he used to wear every alternate day, and he got up and shook my hands and said, ‘Hi I am Shah Rukh,’” added the actor.
Over the years, Apurva acted in a number of well-known TV shows like Kkusum, Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin, Sapna Babul Ka… Bidaai, Kehne Ko Humsafar Hain, etc. But he didn’t get lucky with too many films. Sharing the reason for this according to him, Apurva said, “You cannot be an introvert if you want to succeed in showbiz. You have to market yourself. You have to be out there. I couldn’t do that. I couldn’t party every day and butter people up.”
