Sunil Lahri raises concerns about Ranbir Kapoor playing Lord Ram: “After doing Animal, it will be very difficult for people to see him in such an opposite role”

Ranbir Kapoor is gearing up to take on a monumental role – Lord Ram – in director Nitesh Tiwari's upcoming film on Ramayana. This casting choice has sparked discussions among fans and critics, with veteran actor Sunil Lahri offering a unique perspective.

Sunil Lahri's reservations on Ranbir Kapoor’s casting in Ramyana

Sunil Lahri, who played Lakshmana in Ramanand Sagar's iconic 1980s television series Ramayan, expressed some reservations about RK’s casting. While acknowledging his acting talent and family legacy, Lahri raised concerns about audience perception, particularly following Kapoor's performance in the recently released film Animal.

Lahri stated in a Hindustan Times interview, "He has to crush his earlier performances and come out with this. And especially, after doing something like Animal recently, it will be very difficult for people to see him in such an opposite role as Lord Ram."

The challenge of embodying Lord Ram after Animal

Lahri suggests that a fresh face might have been more suited for the role, someone without a "predefined image" that could clash with the audience's perception of Lord Ram. Kapoor's portrayal of a character with a violent streak in Animal stands in stark contrast to the virtuous and noble nature of Lord Ram. This transition presents a significant acting challenge for Kapoor, requiring him to fully embody the essence of this revered figure in Hindu mythology.

Ramayana’s casting choice that divides opinion

The casting of Ranbir Kapoor has divided opinions. Some viewers express confidence in Kapoor's ability to deliver a compelling performance, highlighting his versatility as an actor. Others, like Lahri, remain cautious about how audiences will reconcile Kapoor's recent on-screen persona with the character of Lord Ram.

Speaking of the upcoming project, Ramayana boasts an impressive cast alongside Ranbir Kapoor. Arun Govil, who played Lord Ram in Ramanand Sagar's Ramayan, will portray King Dasharatha. Sai Pallavi steps in as Goddess Sita, replacing Alia Bhatt due to scheduling conflicts. Yash, known for his role in KGF, will be seen as Ravana. The film also features established actors Sunny Deol and Lara Dutta.
