Varun Dhawan quips David Dhawan almost abandoned him in London when he called Kuch Kuch Hota Hai ‘cooler’ than Bade Miyan Chote Miyan: “He said, ‘I will leave you on the streets here’”

Actor Varun Dhawan, who is promoting Citadel: Honey Bunny, recently shared a humorous anecdote from his childhood related to his father, filmmaker David Dhawan. Back in 1998, the Indian film industry witnessed a major box office showdown. On one side stood a vibrant comedy directed by Varun's father, David Dhawan, titled Bade Miyan Chote Miyan. This star-studded production boasted of veteran actors Amitabh Bachchan and Govinda. On the other hand, a young director named Karan Johar was making his directorial debut with a romantic musical drama, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. This film featured Shah Rukh Khan alongside the leading ladies Kajol and Rani Mukerji.

Varun, then a young boy, found himself caught between the two releases. While speaking to Screen for Indian Express, the actor recalled the incident and said, “The Bade Miyan Chote Miyan premiere was in London–I don’t know why they did it there–and the producers had got us a limousine with faces of Govinda and Amitabh Bachchan pasted on it. We were going through the streets of London in that limousine, with both of them making funny faces in the poster. But I was dying to watch Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and I didn’t even know Karan at that point of time!”

Varun's enthusiastic pleas for the other film clearly tested his father's patience. “Kuch Kuch Hota Hai just felt like a cooler film, but my dad was like, ‘Stop it, I will leave you on the streets here.’ I remember telling him you can’t treat children here like this and my dad was like, ‘He is so badly behaved, why did I get him here’. Day one of Bade Miyan was bigger because of the mass factor but obviously Kuch Kuch Hota Hai went on to become huge. And I ultimately got launched by Karan Johar!” Varun said.

Looking ahead, Varun Dhawan is gearing up for the release of his upcoming projects.  His digital debut, Citadel: Honey Bunny, slated for release on November 7, sees him paired alongside Samantha Ruth Prabhu in a thrilling espionage drama. Following this, Varun will return to the big screen with another action-packed film titled Baby John, produced by Atlee, the director behind Shah Rukh Khan's Jawan.
