Filmmaker Vidhu Vinod Chopra, known for powerful narratives like Lage Raho Munna Bhai and 3 Idiots, has shed light on the origin story of his recent hit, 12th Fail. In a recent interaction with the media, Chopra revealed that the idea for the film, based on the true story of IPS officer Manoj Kumar Sharma, was sparked by director Rajkumar Hirani.
As reported by Hindustan Times, Chopra shared, "Manoj Sharma himself came to me with the book, requesting a blurb. I noticed endorsements from Raju Hirani and Sachin Tendulkar on the back. I called Raju, and he instantly said, 'This book is a film!'"
While Hirani was busy with other commitments, his nudge ignited the flame for Chopra. He began writing the script, eventually falling in love with the story. This is where another crucial connection emerged: "It was Raju who suggested Vikrant Massey's name," Chopra said. "I had seen his work in A Death in the Gunj and admired him. Vikrant's dedication and talent truly inspired me to direct this film."
Adapted from Anurag Pathak's book, 12th Fail narrates the inspiring journey of Sharma, who rose from poverty to become an IPS officer. The film also highlights the unwavering support of his wife, IRS officer Shraddha Joshi, played by Medha Shankr. Massey delivers a powerful performance as Sharma, garnering critical acclaim for his portrayal.
12th Fail was released in October 2023 and has garnered praise from prominent figures like Kareena Kapoor, Kamal Haasan, and Alia Bhatt. It even bagged the Best Film award at the prestigious 69th Filmfare Awards.
