It was the night of celebration and performances at the Video Music Awards 2021 which was held on September 12 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. Global superstars BTS, who couldn't attend the award show, won Group of the Year as well as Best K-Pop and Song of the Summer for their song 'Butter.' The group sent a message via video accepting the award as RM said, “ARMYs, this is all possible thanks to you guys. Although we can’t meet in person, we feel your love every minute and second.” The group became the most awarded group at the VMAs 2021.

Justin Bieber returned to the VMA stage to perform his latest hit 'Stay' with the Kid Laroi. He also crooned 'Ghost' off his recent album Justice. Meanwhile, Chloe Bailey, of the R&B duo Chloe x Halle, performed her new single, 'Have Mercy.' Lil Nas X, who won Video of the Year, made a comeback on the stage to perform 'Industry Baby.' Normani delivered a sexy performance on 'Wild Side' giving a nod to Aaliyah and Janet Jackson.
